Plagiarism: Students attention is drawn to the Handbook and Senate Ordinances on plagiarism (i.e. passing someone elses words off as your own). All direct quotations must be indicated with quotation marks and accurately footnoted, including page numbers of books and articles. Plagiarism is a serious offence and will result in a grade of 0 for the coursework and possible expulsion from the University. Plagiarism is avoided by generally putting material into your own words. If you feel that the wording is unique and significant and you need to retain it, it should be in the form of a direct quotation, with a referencing foot/endnote (this does not apply to single words). Simply putting a reference, but not indicating by using quotation marks that wording is taken unchanged from the source is still plagiarism. So use your own words! Observe the following guidelines very carefully to avoid any penalty. Students should note that all coursework must include foot/endnoted acknowledgement of sources (Harvard style or other recognised system). Two hard copies of your assignment should be submitted to the Undergraduate Office (MJ103) in the Marie Jahoda (Social Science) building, by the due date and time. You are advised not to leave this until the very last minute. Assignments must never be handed direct to the module leader or seminar leader, or any other tutor. An appropriate cover sheet must be completed and attached to each one and these are available at the Undergraduate Office. It is your responsibility to get work in on time: do not pass it to someone else to hand in! Assignments submitted late can only be submitted in person at the Undergraduate Office. Where no mitigating circumstances are presented and the assignment is submitted within two weeks of the deadline then the mark will be capped at 40% for Undergraduate work. After 2 weeks the work will be given 0%. Where mitigating circumstances are submitted this must be done via Emma Perry in MJ103 and on the standard proforma available from Undergraduate Offices. If these are accepted then normally an extension of up to 7 days will be granted. Where serious mitigating circumstances are submitted for assignments handed in more than 7 days late, then these will not be considered until the Examination Panel or Board for the module concerned has met. If the mitigating circumstances are accepted by the Panel or Board, this may result in the reduction or removal of the late penalty. Extensions are only granted for genuine medical reasons, and for documented personal circumstances such as close family bereavements. Applications It is students responsibility to plan accordingly and get their work in on time. The following are not acceptable excuses for lateness: computer or printer breakdown, being caught in traffic or delays in public transport. It is the students responsibility to make any mitigating circumstances known, in advance of the meeting of the Board of Examiners. Please see Senate Ordinance 13 for information regarding appeals against the decision of the Board of Examiners. Such appeals must be made within 21 days of the notification of results. Submission of Coursework: Two hard copies of your essay must be submitted to the Politics and History Undergraduate Office (MJ103) on the ground floor of the Social Sciences Marie Jahoda Building, Uxbridge Campus. Lecturers cannot take in coursework. Coursework Essay Assignments will need to be handed in by 4pm, at the latest, on the appointed day. Do not leave this to the last minute. Late essays without mitigating circumstances and handed in within two weeks of the deadline will be capped at 40 percent. After two weeks the work will receive an automatic zero. It is the students responsibility to get work in on time. The following are not legitimate excuses for lateness: pc or printer breakdown, lost computer disks, being caught in traffic or delays in public transport. For each piece of work submitted you must complete a blue cover sheet. Receipts are available on request. Coursework handed in directly to tutors will not be eligible for academic credit. Coursework handed in late will earn the above penalties, unless Emma Perry (MJ103, Undergraduate Office) has granted an official extension. Lecturers are not allowed to consider such matters. You are advised to keep a copy of all work submitted for assessment, for your record. Procedures for Requests for Extensions: All requests for extensions must be made to Emma Perry before the due date. Students confined to bed or hospital by illness, or for some other good reason unable to attend in person, should ensure a letter postmarked before the due date is sent to the department. Presentation of Mitigating Circumstances to Board of Examiners: If you have mitigating circumstances that have affected your performance in this module, they should be notified to the departmental administrators within seven days of the deadline for the assignment or the date of the examination. Full documentation should be submitted. It is the student's responsibility to make any mitigating circumstances known, in advance of the meeting of the Board of Examiners for that semester. Please see Senate Ordinance 13 for information regarding appeals against the decision of the Board of Examiners. Such appeals must be made within 21 days of the notification of results.
