JSTOR includes
various electronic journals, from c. 1900 to five
years ago (a rolling programme) in Asian Studies, Economics,
Education, History, Literature, Philosophy, Political Science,
Sociology with search facilities included. 'On-site' and
'off-site' access allows you to 'use' such materials (see H)
ON-SITE
ACCESS
JSTOR is accessible on site
at Brunel through logging into to any of the computer terminals.
- Log-on (password,
etc.) which takes you to the general computer screen
desktop area
- Start > Network
Programs > Netscape > [automatically
goes to Brunel Web site] >
- Current students >
Services > Library > Electronic
Resources > Access to Electronic Resources
- Alphabetical order >
Continue > JSTOR Click Here >
Continue > Enter JSTOR > Search
JSTOR
Which takes you to the
final JSTOR search page where you set
- Search for
(choose theme), search in (choose/tick journals),
so as to then > Search
OFF-SITE ACCESS
You can go directly to
JSTOR, i.e. click on www.jstor.com, where using a library-obtainable ATHENS password you can then enter your
search, etc.
WHAT DO F YOU E FINALLY WANT TO DO ?
Your above on-site/off-site
search steps will produce varied materials, for you to choose
what to then do with, i.e.
- INITIAL
VIEW: Read
article on screen page by page for first impressions
- SAVE
IT: Download
article, set quality by right mouse click. Right-clicking
on PDF: High Quality, gives better viewing, though
(often crucial) space is saved by instead right-clicking
on the PDF: Lower Quality. Either way, then set
saved/dowloaded destination as floppy disk (A-drive) or
on-site your Brunel space (H-drive), or off-site home
computer (usually C-drive). It should then have been
saved as a file there for subsequent use by you, see
below.
- LEISURELY
READ: Having
'Saved it' (see above), then you need to open up that
file again. PDF files are NOT opened up by ordinary Word
(97,etc.). Instead Adobe Acrobat Reader needs
to be installed and present on your system, which on-site
at Brunel is already actually installed.
- PRINTING
IT: The
immediate JSTOR Print facility is fiddly,
piecemeal and limited to 1-2 pages. Much, much, better is
to 'Save it' (see above) as a PDF file. Having saved it
onto either your Brunel space (H-drive), or Floppy disk
(A-drive), or home computer (probably C-drive) - then
open it up. From there (see above Leisurely Read),
then go to File, Print, etc.
Space problems ?
JSTOR files can sometimes
take up a lot of space if they have 'graphics' (maps, pictures,
etc.) included in the article. Thus, keep an eye on your Brunel
H-drive allocation space. Delete existing files, and e-mails,
when necessary. When first saving/downloading such JSTOR (i.e
PDF) files, space is also saved if you 'right-mouse' click on PDF
